Pedestrian Bridge Design/Build Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, Camp Laughing Waters
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania
In 2008, The Castle Group was retained to design and construct a new 140 foot long pedestrian bridge for a Girl Scouts camp located in Gilbertsville, PA. The client redesigned the camp site to include a new route for pedestrians to cross Swamp Creek. W.J. Castle, P.E. & Associates, P.C., was responsible for all engineering and construction management of the bridge and foundations. The pre-fabricated bridge provided by Eagle Bridge was shipped to the site in two modules ready for immediate installation. This design choice greatly reduced the construction time required to install the bridge.
Hydro-Marine Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for the construction from the start of the project to final installation. The concrete abutments were founded on “Chance” Helical Piles to eliminate the need for large spread footings. The stain on the abutments and the weathering steel on the bridge were chosen to blend in with the rustic environment providing the client with a natural aesthetics for their camp. Construction of the bridge began in April of 2008 and was completed by June 2008.
