Design and Construction of New Bridge & Roadway for Interstate Storage & Pipeline
Burlington, New Jersey
In 2002 W.J. Castle, P.E. & Associates, P.C. & Hydro-Marine Construction Co., Inc. were retained to design and construct a new bridge for a major jet fuel supplier in Burlington County, New Jersey.
Hydro-Marine Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for the construction and construction management of the bridge site from site preparation to final installation. The abutment foundation was constructed of a steel cap beam supported by five 3½” diameter Chance Helical Piles. This design was used to accommodate the presence of underground gas lines, overhead power lines, and New Jersey Transit restrictions. After the bridge superstructure was installed, a 7” deep concrete deck was poured in place. Construction of the bridge was completed in one week. Approximately 750 feet of roadway was constructed, included stone filled gabion walls, chain link fence, steel beam guiderail, and security gates. All engineering, from bridge design to final roadway design, was performed by W.J. Castle, P.E. & Associates, P.C.
This project received two awards in 2005 as a result of innovative design and construction techniques from NJDOT and DVASE.
